An interesting article

December 09 2016

Just thought I'd post an interesting article I found ,I always knew booze put on weight ,but never really thought about why Hope this article might help someone out there if your trying for a better summer body There is one major thing I notice in today's society ! Everything we do MUST include alcohol and as a mentor of mine has described it's the one thing that will literally drug you fat ! When you drink beer, wine, or spirits, the ethanol in those beverages is given priority by your body in metabolism. Alcohol is a non-nutritive calorie source. It'll drain your levels of B-vitamins, zinc, magnesium and others. This will cause effects unwanted on metabolism. It works in a four step process that looks like this: Ethanol → Acetaldehyde →Acetate → Acetyl-CoA Acetate and acetyl-CoA can be used for energy by the body but it's costly. One gram of alcohol contains 7 calories, its conversion into energy is inefficient as about 20% of its energy is lost. In other words, it has a very high thermogenic effect. Contrary to popular belief, alcohol is not easily converted to fat. That process is too costly. But all that acetate and acetyl-CoA showing up in the cells does signal to the body that no sugar or fat needs to be burned. So rather than a fat storer, alcohol is more of a fat burning suppressor, and usually in turn leads to poor food choices and increased weight and storage of fat on top of internal inflammation and organ damage. Alcohol at the doses people consume will effect performance, recovery and nutrient absorption from food, not to mention it'll screw with your head, blur your decisions to eat correctly and keep you from sleeping well. Alcohol has these effects on muscle metabolism: raises myostatin, decreases glycogen resynthesis, decreases post-exercise inflammation, suppresses exercise induced mTOR (likely by reducing cellular phosphatidic acid) affects insulin and IGF-1 signaling. All of this is bad for building muscle. There is one noticeable thing amongst clients of mine that have had a history of frequent alcohol consumption ! They all struggle to lose fat and build muscle irrespective of how we'll they stick to their food and how well they train ! Alcohol is your best worst friend .... Get rid of it ! Interesting that you posted this article when using a profile picture with such a beverage focus. I can see two glasses and two jugs - only one appears to be real 'mother's milk'.With a beautiful view like that it's no wonder you've been driven to drink...

Never thought of alcohols effects in that way. I have to also agree about the point that states everything we do must include alcohol. I don't mind a beer or two, but I only drink on weekends and I don't drink with everything I do. A lot of people I know though have to drink and not just 2 or 3. More like 12 or 15. It's like they can't function or interact socially without being pissed which can get annoying because I've had some of the same people in turn get annoyed and offended that someone else isn't drinking as much as them - Posted from rhpmobile

Agree with centralcoast. A few is fine and there's nothing wrong with getting stuck in and having a bigger night or session with a lover or friends when the mood takes, every so often, but not all the time, alcohol doesn't need to go with everything we do. I don't like alcohol when I'm hooking up, sometimes I'll share a bottle of red, but we rarely make it through the first glass 😉 In relation to weight and alcohol, I think the main offender for men is beer and for both men and women, sugared cooldrink or wine/wine mixer type drinks. Lot of sugar in all of those. I drink scotch and coke zero, my drink of choice, have usually 2 every night and it does no harm to my body, for me, I think it actually helps my metabolism, along with chocolate and coffee, because I know my body, I have bowel issues and if I don't eat and drink a variety of stuff, well let's just say I need to. I manage it fine by consuming things that not only have a diaretic effect, along with exercise which is the most important factor, but our bodies are all different with what we can process/metabolise. Protein, for example, my body processes it really easy, but too much carbohydrate and I bloat, but that's not the same for everyone. I don't drink beer for that reason, drank enough when I was young to last a lifetime lol my point is that nutritional guidelines are good, but every person should experiment and find what their body likes 😃

Most people don't realise all the effects alcohol has on the body. It does far more damage overall and costs society much more than the illegal drugs. (said while drinking my white wine )

Your pleasure 8: it is an article on T-Nation. Google a few of the key sentences as quotes and it will show up, I think the Ethanol metabolism pathway will give the article as a high up result.

There's a comment about this post saying it's from the fun police. That's exactly the point I was making. Assuming people who don't drink (much or at all) don't have fun or thinking you cant have fun without getting pissed can be the problem. If someone wants to get completely shitfaced then that's their right. But non drinkers also have fun, they just prefer to do it with less alcohol - Posted from rhpmobile

Not that anyone would think that based on the amount of alcohol I've consumed at the last few meets ;) I know plenty of people who can't enjoy themselves without a drink, and even sadder - those who can't get through a day without one. But it's good to highlight the affect is has on the body. There are lots of women and men out there training excessively and watching every portion of food they stick in their mouths who think nothing of the grog they are chugging down on a Friday and Saturday night.

I'm glad you brought that up about some of the fitness freaks that drink excessively. I've met a few like that. They can be so militant with their discipline with food and some will actually belittle people who don't watch their diet like they do. They talk about how extremely strict we should be with what we put in our mouth but then go on a bender with the drink. I don't actually care if they do but their credibility is lost on me when they shout you down for having one slice of pizza but then they drink everyone under the table - Posted from rhpmobile

Each to their own ,I agree on discovering how booze is huge at most gatherings and how in your face, people can be when you politely say no to a drink ,since the start of this year we have limited our consumption which btw was never much anyway ,but due to our son And leading by example in the no alcohol go zone ,due to an acquired brain injury he suffered , We find we are always the only ones not drinking , we reserve our drinks for when he is not around ,but this article wasn't about that it was meant as an informative article for how it can make it hard to beat the bulge if your trying And yes SUMMER,I too drink scotch, bourbon ,vodka or tequila all with those little cascade sodas ,the sugars in all other mixers are evil - Posted from rhpmobile
