We are all bombarded with the unrealistic idea of the perfect body shape. The media force's us to believe that we have to be a size 0 or have ripped abs which in all reality is not the average person. I personally love seeing so called plus sized models becoming more prevalent in the media. Being "over weight " doesn't mean that you are unfit or unhealthy. Most of the time its a case of a certain metabolism or genetic body shape. EVERYBODY IS BEAUTIFUL - Posted from rhpmobile

CHEV, your argument is a bit confused. You state that Barbie was unrealistic and the change is a good thing. So if that change is to represent what people are really like,. .....then reality INCLUDES obesity. They're just dolls, chev. They're not aspirational physical identities. I think it may say more about the parents who are paying for "big arse possibly lesbian" Barbie to give to their kids...... seeking to sway and coach a child instead of just letting a child choose to be a child playing with a doll. We are wise to be far more concerned about what children are exposed to via social media, where images of real people are portrayed unrealistically. 2c - Posted from rhpmobile

Begged me for a Barbie for years..being the good feminist that I was,I refused.. Eventually my mother bought her one and so did the next door neighbour..a few weeks later I found them with their heads chopped off..fortunately she didn't go onto be a serial killer 😳xxFreya

Whilst I'm glad there is now a bit more diversity in the Barbie range, I don't think I'd say that curvy Barbie encourages obesity. She's still quite slim - she's just curvy by comparison to the previous model! - Posted from rhpmobile

I appreciate the recognition of 'the less than perfect' image Barbie has so often offered us. There's more to life than the bodies we inhabit. .I'm sorry I haven't seen any of the examples you mentioned Annie. .Peachy

Last time I was down at the shops I noticed a shelf full of the new RHP Barbies. It said on the packaging that this Barbie is a woman who "knows what she wants" and that she "loves shopping" and "having coffee with friends". If you wanted to know more you had to fill in an online "ask me" questionnaire. Anyway, I bought one but when I opened the box... there was no one there!

I look at how society is creeping up in it's acceptance of larger body shapes, which for some people is a natural thing. I still don't think most are going anywhere near far enough in recognising that the body is only a part of what we are made up of. Why does the Wizard of Oz pop into my head? .I've avoided most of the furore till now, so as far as Ken goes, I didn't know there was any change beside the Barbie doll but awful glad to hear men are part of the general outlook though it's only Barbie who gets the recognition. :-P.Girl Power? So you think Curvy Babie is Fat Barbie? By saying that goes a bit too far as we're trying to encourage healthy eating and exercise and fight obesity you're indicating that you've seen the Curvy Barbie and, in your opinion, she's fat or obese? I've noticed you've requested we google the topics of your posts. Have you googled the new Barbies and checked them out? Particularly the "Fat Barbie" as you so elequently called it? The doll still has quite a narrow waste but it does give children a more realistic version of curves that women have in the real world. If that's your version of fat, may I suggest you post a preferred dress size on your profile (which would be no greater than a size 10 by the sounds of your post). They are just dolls that reflect a more realistic image in today's society. It's an improvement.

Seriously, which of the new Barbie dolls are "fat"? I see voluptuous and a better representation of real women's body sizes and types. But none of those dolls are fat! The BMI is not an foolproof measurement of obesity but other tools like the body fat percentage machine may be a better indicator. Perhaps also, the waist to hip ratio measurement. Technically, a person can be in the healthy BMI range and look "Average", but may have high body fat percentage results. Conversely, a lady who is "fat" and Size 18 could simply have large bones and muscles, which would make her heavier on the scales. None of those barbies are obese and definitely not morbidly obese. I wouldn't call the new barbies fat, but rather, real and more in touch with reality.

Barbie has always had a non realistic body figure however they have decided to make a variety ofshapes and races. Now that is a good thing but I think it goes to far to make fat Barbie in a time we are trying to fight obesity and get back to healthy eating and exercise. Your thoughts..Regarding your topic, I didn't even know about the Ken dolls and such myself Chev..So to you and anyone else who is interested in the topic, I thought I'd have a google, "types of barbie and ken dolls", and lo and behold, the first thing I came across was. . "‘Why would you want a fat Barbie?’ Internet gives mixed reaction to re-designed dolls".. So it seems like your thread is merely a reflection of the current society attitude which, in my opinion, is a terribly sad one. .Um, apparently there are no new Ken dolls as yet, although on a post dated 30.1.2016. it is suspected there will be, so I don't see how you could have referred to them in your OP. .I thought Pusscat made the perfect point, "that curvy is not fat!". And I believe that it's the people with the attitudes who have the real problem. Peachy

I would use Marilyn Monroe as she had a good bodyshape, not skinny and not plump. That is the image for children however making Asian Barbie will bring us back to very thin yet again as mostAsian women are very thin maybe its a no win situation.

Ken Dolls are trademarked with Barbie. So thankyou for your research. I am disappointed there are no Beer gut Ken dolls on offer with the new curvy Barbie. It is obvious her preference is for slim/athletic men. We are all entitled to seek what we like so wish Barbie well in her search and endeavours

Who knows where they might go in the future. Lego has a wheelchair person. I have a fascination with the idea of TV Barbie in the future (with a big fat) :-P. Will it ever be? Peachy ;-)

Yeah well Annie, asexual till now. A haircut, boobs and a narrow waist, and beguiling butt does not a gender make. ;-).If I designed a dollI would use Marilyn Monroe as she had a good body shape, not skinny and not plump. That is the image for children however making Asian Barbie will bring us back to very thin yet again as most Asian women are very thin maybe its a no win situation..There are 3 new body types Chev. Tall, petite and curvy. .I like to think that represents a few of the everyday body types in the world. From our Kidman's to our Bjork's to our Marilyn's. It would be exciting to think Barbie (Mattel) would have the balls to expand into some realistic men. ..Scuse the puns. :-Peachy

Marilyn Munro is your average woman? She was hardly what you could call "real". She was very carefully crafted for marketing purposes in her era. Apparently the Kim Kardashian barbie comes with an extra box for her butt, a guide for taking the petfect Selfie..... and the inside of the packaging is fully mirrored. Kanye has taken Mattel by siege, proclaiming that Beyoncé made a better Barbie. (There is no truth to the rumour that Mattel is releasing a Bruce/Caitlin Jenner version with interchangeable wardrobe and bumps). - Posted from rhpmobile

these new dolls are in the irrelevant section of the Barbie range - they're sold on the "collector" range sold to adults. Even the Barbie website tells you you're going off to a section "for grown ups". These Barbies are sold to adults to make some adults happy, and will likely reach a handful of children at best.
