From memory, Burt Bacharach himself once said Aretha Franklin's "say a little prayer for you" was better than his version. That's some compliment.

I once was that Bono from U2 commented that he preferred the Pet Shop Boys cover of "Where the streets have no name" to the original.Best cover I ever heard was in a pub. A band called "Le club nerd" covered The Romantics "What I like about you". I think they reversed the base and lead guitar, but it was awesome. And that is considering I like the original :)

Anyone says "Venus" by Bananarama rather than by Shocking Blue, I will slap them.

Sir Swan but can't agree with you. Don Henleys Boys Of Summer is by far the best version including the video clip. We both do agree though with Mesmerised on The Corr's version of Little Wing. We have it on DVD when they did an intimate up close and personal performance. They have been very quiet of late. Mr Luvsilver

Great suggestions so far! This list could be endless. LOL@rocknminx re: Jeff Martin. That guy has unbelievable talent, some possibly undiscovered.... I have been listening to Jeff Buckley tonight, and have to give an honourable mention to a song written by his dad, Tim Buckley called "Song to the Siren" which was covered hauntingly; chillingly; beautifully by This Mortal Coil/ The Cocteau Twins. It was used at a pivotal moment in David Lynch's movie "Lost Highway" which should explain enough.... http://youtu.be/p24IdqUT_zY

" I agree with all of these mentioned by Mesmerised and justforfunisall. And will also add the PSB cover of 'You were always on my mind', still one of my all time favourite songs. Also Brian Molko and Asia Argento's version of 'Je t'aime moi non plus' (originally by Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin). I like how Brian and Asia's version switches the male and female parts of the song.Another recent one is 'Blurred Lines'; the Mod Carousel version is technically a parody rather than a cover and they have changed some words, but I'll include it here anyway

Tainted love and The Eurythmic's song " Everybody's looking for something. Not neccesssarily better but as good in it's own right. The same for Ugly Kid Joe's version of "Cat's in the Cradle" Pseudo Echo's 'Funky Town" was better than Lip Sync. Garth Brooks' take on "Shameless" absolutely destroys Billy Joel's original.

Anyone heard Ewan McGregor's version of "Your song" by Elton John? I actually prefer it to the oroiginal. And then there is Dolly Parton's "I will always love you", covered by Whitney Houston.

Aussie band The Zoot (Rick Springfield, Daryl Cotton) did a kick ass cover of Eleanor Rigby (Beatles).I think it is on ITunes in a compilation Album.

my original post seems to have disappeared, so here I go again. I prefer the Roxy Music tribute version of "Jealous Guy" over the original recording by John Lennon (although I still really like the original but I've got a thing for the 80's sound and production qualities) I also tend to prefer Falco's version of "Looking for Love", called "Munich Girls (Looking for Love)". The original song was an album track from "Heartbeat City" by The Cars.

different versions of one song by the same band? Cheap Trick's version of "I Want You to Want Me" live in Japan is much better and catchier than the original studio version they did, and was a big contributor to their success.

An American group called Powerman 5000 (lead singer is Rob Zombie's little brother) released an album called "Copies, clones and replicants". They covered INXS- devil inside, Devo- Whip it, Eddy Grant- electric avenue and Van Halen- jump. Just to name a few. All songs that I believe are on par with if not better than the originals. The group also did a version of Relax by Frankie goes to Hollywood for the movie Zoolander.
