Question. You have some free time and ...

January 11 2014

... want to visit an awesome place or two in Australia. You've seen a lot but would love to see more. You're happy with touristy spots or off the beaten track. Where are the coolest, most impressive/relaxing/fun/intriguing places to visit in Australia?

There is a village called Gregory on the banks of the Gregory River. Nice little pub and the river is glorious. I was luck to live on this river for two years and I always marveled at the clarity of the water and iconic Australian flora and fauna that lived around it. Ningaloo Reef is on top of my list of places I haven't seen in Australia.

Sydney (God I hear the hate screams!!!!!! Lol), beautiful vibrant and stimulating at this time of year ie free concert, opera in the Domain, Australia Day stuff, harbour - sailing and walks and amazing food ie Nicks @ Darling Harbour, 2 hrs from the Blue Mountains and much much more. Alternatively hire a bare boat charter +\~ skipper from Airlie Beach and sail, swim, snorkel or dive the amazing Great Barrier Reef, take a lover to Whitehaven Beach and make lust on the white sand!! Amazing!!!!!!!!! Places to do, yep Funlover defo Ningaloo and The Kimberly. Soooooooo much choice we live in a stunning country!!!! :)))

Heading up to do a coast crawl in March. I enjoy visiting the little coastal villages that line the way north of Sydney. They remind me of fun childhood school holidays in days past. - Posted from rhpmobile

A little town out of Bundaberg called Woodgate. Fraser Island. Lawn Hill National Park. Just north of Cairns in the Daintree the Rain Forrest meets the beach, absolutely amazing. Strahan on Tassie's west coast, travel up the Franklin & be lost in time. There are far too many to mention. We live in a wonderful country, take the time to explore & enjoy it.

Including days on a liveaboard, diving on the Reef, but a few interesting and new ideas are arising. Little sweet spots I've never heard of! And Ningaloo seems popular. What about the Red Centre or Northern Territory? Any and all ideas welcome, I'm hungry for inspiration :)

Vast and varied landscapes of WA? Beautiful clean Perth, the amazing south west region of the state... The inland deserts, the coral reefs Midwest, the camels on the beach in Broome, the Kimberly at the top of the state.. - Posted from rhpmobile

I agree with Wingman, the North coast is gorgeous! I live on the beautiful central coast, but love Port Mac which has been a second home since my sister moved there 30 years ago, and adore Coffs Harbour, and all the great towns and beaches along the way

Busy ones, unfortunately only 2 in Oz, Syd and Melb. Doesn't matter how many times you go, there is always a new spot to be found. Those who want a "memorable" break, go to Lightning Ridge.

the Overland Track in Tassy - DO IT! Although I think they've fancied it up since I did it. No fancy huts and loos then. Just us our packs, tents and lots and lots of mud!!!

I've seen a bit, but not nearly enough. That's got me thinking :) A slow trip up the east coast - rather than the usual hurried ones maybe, too. Perhaps I could visit some of you lovely folk on the way ... The possibilities are really starting to feel endless.

The top end of this country is AMAZING and full of a variety of landscapes that would surprise most Aussies. Try getting yourself to El Questro Station up in the Kimberly region of WA, that shit will blow your mind (even if you're not a nature lover, just whatever the hell you do, don't go there in the hot/wet season, wait for "winter"!). It's also home to one of the most exclusive and secretive resorts in the world, can only chopper in and out of it. Google it and see. If you're into 4wding and want to test your nuts, get on the Gibb River Rd for a while up there :) Also in NT Litchfield National Park is like the little brother to our famous Kakadu NP. It's much easier to access, has hours of exploring and amazing water holes. I got a natural back massage from falling water in the ambling km's of rockpools and fresh sparkling water, so much WIN! Broome is great and has an awesome nude section of cable beach (if that's what you're into!). Watching sunset over water should not be underestimated! Byron Bay/Lennox head has to be some of the best coastline in the country IMHO (and I've seen the majority of it). I second the suggestions to visit Cairns, that place is FULL of fun things to do and a really social light-hearted atmosphere. It's so small but it has more nightlife in it's city centre than Brissy on regular nights! Backpacker party zone :) It's also visually spectacular! I also can back up suggestions to visit Ningaloo. I grew up in Cairns so I got to experience the great barrier reef and compared to Ningaloo it was fascinating. Ningaloo is like what the GBR was like once, clean, untouched, very few tourists and boats around, not built up at all, spectacular reef colours and marine life. I swam with massive manta rays and whale sharks in their natural habitat up there. And on land there are Emu's everywhere (one tried to eat my garbage out of the 4wd when my back was turned!) and wildlife that will keep you entertained :) And closer to home for you, I've always had a soft spot for Kiama, but I'm sure you've been there done that!

area near me that I do consider worth mentioning, is the Atherton Tablelands. As the name suggests the region is elevated so it's a lot cooler than the surrounding lower lands. There are some beautiful waterfalls, volcanic crater lakes, and lovely little towns like Yungaburra and Kuranda. Kuranda has great markets, cultural, and rainforest / wildlife attractions. As far as I know you can still take either the Kuranda train or the skyrail to go between Cairns and Kuranda, up and down through the mountainous rainforest.
