World slavery... Twiggy Forrest an Australian billionaire

March 21 2014

Has brought together three of the worlds major religions to end slavery. He recently launched the Global Freedom network which aims to free the worlds 30 million slaves. When he was in Nepal at an orphanage he found that the children were being groomed for sex work. They were being trafficked through India into the Middle East. Forrest commanded a review of all his supply chains and found that three out of four could not sign the affadavits that that said that no slave labour was involved in the production of their goods and services. Forrest resigned as chief executive of Fortesque and now spends his time in philanthropic causes. He said"To live a useful life you actually have to help others" Some figures re slavery..... China...3 million....forced labour in modern industries including fashion and computer industries....this was a shock to me....most of our clothing is made in China India ...13million...many people born into slavery.....construction and textile industries Thailand.....450 ,000....high numbers of children involved in the seafood industry Bangladesh....360,000 women and girls exploited and trafficked for sex and labour. Russia,Pakistan,Myanmar,The Congo are other countries mentioned. I was shocked when I read this article,I had no idea that we are all so complicit in perpetuating this evil practice. I am certainly rethinking my buying habits,a small thing I know but if we all do this perhaps we can make a small protest and make a difference. xx Q

Lisa Kristine delivered a profound Ted Talk on modern, global slavery. She's a photographer and it's essentially a photo essay. I'd recommend taking a moment to watch it - when I watched it I tried to imagine living the life of one of the slaves and I simply couldn't. Too remote from my life and frankly too horrific. I sense the environmental catastrophes of the world are closely connected to the human catastrophes. "Today, entire families can be enslaved for generations over a debt as low as $18". So that we can have cheap clothes ... And small actions my large numbers of people can be powerful :) Thanks for raising such a challenging topic.

Its called Half the Sky and its that horrifying that I can only read a bit at a time. and look at us all, we all want the cheaper stuff right? the TV the laptop the clothes in particularthe clothing industry in this country is gone because we all want to change our fashion all the time and get that bargain. I get 90 precent of my clothes from good sammies. I get my furniture of gumtree, yes its still made over seas but at least I am recycling as much as I can. I do not go shopping unless I have something specific that I need, its not a hobby for me I loath the shops. as for sex workers, there are thousands of trafficked women in Australia, so guys who do go to workers need to really be very careful and got to brothels that they know the girls , can leave the premise, can be alone with the client and can speak English. Also to check the person is not underage. I know several brothels in Sydney got caught with underage trafficked girls.they bring them in on fake student visa and that is the spiel they give to clients, yes I am student here. bullshit the local papers for sex workers, just see how many are not Australian women. Not too many ausie girls work it anymore as the price of a bonk is driven down to next to nothing with the free pussy on offer on the net. its only hundred bucks at most for a fuck, that's pathetic. there are more slaves now in the world than ever before, in proportion to population slavery is on the increase and the biggest factor now is AIDS, they take girls as young as seven into brothels and most are dead by age 20 you fifo guys going overseas cause its cheaper, make sure the girl you have can leave the brothel, if she cant you can bet she is a trafficked woman. If a woman has unprotected sex as well is a good indication. The brothel owner discourages that as men pay more for sex without a condom, yes sad but true. even girls on the street can be trafficked as they a watched and also so controlled by the psychological damage they cant run away. I encourage everyone to read that book Half the Sky and to men, if there is no demand there is no supply

. The same stores whose Australia Day products are from China. He n me don't buy from them or any the souvenir shops who are in the same situation. Even the Australia Day freebies from the West Australian Newspaper are always made in China. It seems the ultimate irony to me. . Powerful post Tuscan.

I recently travelled through Nepal & India, I went to quite a few non tourist places as I met my sponsor child and also visited an orphanage that my mother in law was involved with. I was their guest for a few days and toured the medical centre & school. Foreign aid does some wonderful things. With poverty so palpable and awful people in this world so happy to profit from others misery I can never see this ending sadly enough. It's been happening since time began. But agree that our purchasing habits need to change. Apple are forever in trouble for this behaviour, how about you all get rid of your Apple products!

all in it. We want more and more, the corporate world needs to be feeding on something. The misery of peopel who supply us with all the "stuff" it is not shown to us in the media or we don't take any notice of it. Slavery is everywhere in the world. As long as consumerism drives us to buy more and more, we will not stamp out slavery.....that's my belief. Look around you, look consciously around you what we have.....is there really anything we NEED? or is it just we WANT. OHH the adds. and saying....... "YOU DESERVE IT" thats such clever three words planted into our mind. Somehave a robe full of shoes and so much clothes they don't even wear, but buy more because the trend changes.... We have to buy the newest mobile phone...because a newer is better, faster. The old one is still fine but not good enough anymore. We are driven to buy.....we are junkies we all are, in one way or another.....and someone has to supply the "food" so this hunger for things can be stilled for a short while until the hunger sets in again. We the buyers are the slave drivers.
